Iridescent, gilded, hand-molded, and signed — this is one of the most beautiful decanters in the shop. Girolamo Luxardo of Torreglia, Italy commissioned this Grecian wine jug from Italian majolica craftsmen to hold their Ardo Cherry Wine, and the result is a piece that transcends its origins as a promotional bottle entirely. It is simply a magnificent object.
The shape is a classical Greek amphora — the vessel used to carry and serve wine in antiquity — rendered in genuine Italian majolica with a breathtaking lusterware and gold finish. The iridescence shifts with the light, moving through golds, coppers, and warm bronzes. All original labels are intact: one reads "Genuine Italian Majolica, Hand Moulded and Decorated, Italy." The piece is signed on the bottom by "Este" — a reference to the renowned ceramics town of Este in the Veneto region of Italy, one of the great centers of Italian majolica production. Now empty and stopper-free — but since traditional Greek wine jugs were never stoppered, it displays perfectly as it is. Add a cork if you prefer.

Girolamo Luxardo was founded in Zara, Dalmatia (present-day Croatia) in 1821 by Girolamo Luxardo, a Genoese consul who developed the now-famous Maraschino liqueur from local Marasca cherries. The company survived two World Wars — including the near-complete destruction of the original distillery in 1943 — and rebuilt in Torreglia, in the Veneto hills of Italy. Today Luxardo remains family-owned in its sixth generation, still producing Maraschino and a range of Italian liqueurs. Their collectible ceramic decanters from the 1960s and 1970s are increasingly sought after.
Este has been a center of Italian majolica production since the 18th century, known for the exceptional quality of its local clay and the artistry of its ceramic workshops. Pieces signed or stamped "Este" carry a guarantee of genuine Italian craftsmanship.
